3 Easy Tips To Gain More Free Time

Happy Aloha Friday Everyone!

A few months back, well January 1st to be exact, I decided to make a life goal, I’m not a fan of the phrase “New Years Resolution”. My goal was to spend my down time doing more productive things. Things that would educate me, help me grow as a person, things I could look back on and be proud of!

Come to find out, I’ve been wasting SO much more time then I realized, literally throwing it away!

TimeYou don’t realize the amount of time that is wasted on social media and surfing the web. It’s seriously ridiculous. It’s a domino effect, you go from just having to check one thing and by the time you’re done you’ve been through all your emails, social media sites and read ten blog posts. Seriously? How does that happen?! Before you know it, it’s time to go to bed. So you rush to get into bed at a decent time, crawl in between your sheets, then what do you do? Pick up your phone for “just a few more minutes”.

Technology has taken over and not in a good way. Don’t get me wrong there are great things about it. Without it I wouldn’t be able to do something I love or keep in touch with my family and friends that live an ocean away. But what many people aren’t realizing is it’s cutting into our face to face family/friend time and just our “life” time in general!

There’s nothing more irritating then going out for coffee or lunch with someone and they are constantly picking up their phone to check their Instagram! Hello…I’m right in front of you…not cool people! Not to mention, it’s just plain rude. (If you think this is about you, it probably isn’t…but if the shoe fits…)

So when I decided enough was enough, and I no longer wanted to be consumed by this, here’s what I did and I hope this can help you free up some of your time as well:

1) Pick two times a day that you can check your social media or surf the web.

I chose during my lunch break and when I’m done working.

2) Give yourself a time limit.

My limit is 20 minutes, meaning 40 minutes a day, this leaves me plenty of time to check my Instagram, send a Tweet, reply to comments, post a picture or browse Pinterest (my guilty pleasure). This way I have to pick one site I want to be on and I don’t end up on all of them.

3) Shut down your computer, laptop, tablet, whatever it is you use and put your phone away!

I use my electronics all day for work. My set up is literally my iMac, MacBook, iPad and iPhone. I use all of them. So at the end of the work day after that last email is sent or task is complete I shut down both computers and put my iPad and iPhone away.

Since applying these steps to my everyday life I’ve had SO much free time! I didn’t think it would make that much of a difference but believe me, it does! Here’s just a few things I’ve been able to accomplish with my new found FREE time:

* Read books that have changed my perspective on life.

(The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The 4 Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss)

* Planted flowers and veggies for the garden I’ve been determined to start.

* Outlined and started working on more frequent blog posts. Yay!

* Started doing yoga and working out regularly again.

* I’ve even been taking French lessons using Fluenz!

I used to think I was “too busy” or “didn’t have the time” to do any of these things. Keep in mind, these are things I’ve actually been wanting to do. Come to find out, I just sucked at time management and was wasting my VALUABLE time in all the wrong places.

Have you fell into this technology dependency? What are some things you’ve done to limit your time? Have you been able to enjoy more things that you wouldn’t otherwise?
